His legacy

Arup is, no doubt, remembered by those who knew him closely as a charming, lively, honest, loving, and responsible young man. He was a caring, helpful friend, in whom one could repose one's whole faith with no feeling of uncertainty. Never did he sermonize, but his life spoke aloud. One of his watchwords was balance: between the family and the nation, emotion and reason, idealism and practicality, and so on. Plan ahead so that you are not in soup, confounding everything. Another, as one remembers, is: Do what you say. Don't preach what you can't do. Remember this in every details of life. When you talk about the good of the people, how can you waste even a little of electricity, water, or fuel? - he would chide one! And his life has been one of complete devotion to what he held dear to his heart. Wholeheartedness is the ultimate thing. Suffer, but do not open your mouth to pass your burden on others. Be the most tender, and never hurt others. Make sacrifices, but do not even be aware that you do so. Strive continuously for the better in every field. Be free, leaving aside dogmatic hang-ups. Be free, and judge for yourself. Come out of social conditioning, apply your own brain. Be happy and try to make others happy, as much as lies in your capacity. Stretch yourself as much as you can to stand beside your friends. And forget not: "I am an Indian, every Indian is my brother."
