College days

2008 - 2011

In 2008 he was admitted to Kalyani Mahavidyalaya for the three year B.A. degree course with History Honours. Physical education and Bengali were the Pass subjects. He attended an NSS camp arranged by the college from 15 to 24 March 2010. His interest in art was now to find a new avenue. With his college friend Gopal, he became a student of Kanan Art Academy for some months about 2009 - 2010 (Second year in college). There they worked outdoor and produced several good paintings and sketches. He had another hobby of collecting artistic earthen flower vases from Madhyamgram-Birati region. These items he preserved with great care and affection and used for the purpose of decoration on special occasions. During this period he was full of creative urge. The friend circle was very good. Among them were Gopal, Anabil, Jamirul, Soumen, and others. Gopal had several aquariums, so he would also have one at home. While in the 1st year (BA), he started to learn spoken English at Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Calcutta, which he had to discontinue soon due to pressure from his college where also he had to attend classes. He was very regular in attending classes henceforth. Yet, later he began to learn English well on his own. In August 2009 he took a short course on medical first aid offered by Indian Red Cross Society. It was the right age for his involvement with the Mahamandal to deepen, and it did. He attended All India the Annual Youth Training Camp 2008 of the Akhil Bharat Vivekananda Yuva Mahamandal at Gangadharpur and worked a lot for its Kalyani unit. He was the Assistant Secretary of the unit for the year 2012-2013. He took active roles in organizing programmes, including Swami Vivekananda's birthday celebrations, daylong camps, bookstalls at book fairs, etc. He also assisted in editing as well as distributing the monthly organ of the Mahamandal, 'Vivek-Jivan'. Several young men were inspired by him and associated themselves with the work. On 23 Jan 2010 he visited a local brick kiln for photography. But the plight of the working children touched his tender heart. Next day he reported the experience at the weekly study circle of the Mahamandal and asked if anything could be done. Immediately a team was formed and they visited the kiln 26 Jan. The owner of the kiln welcomed their proposal of some educational work for the children there. This was the genesis of the literacy-cum-awareness programme run by the Kalyani unit of the Mahamandal. As he grew up, he always thought it important to earn something instead of depending on parents for everything. So, he ran coaching classes on history at his home since he was in the HS level and never gave it up. He used audio-visual means for teaching and dreamed he would some day employ such means in abundance to impart education. The art classes, however, were discontinued when he was in the 1st year (BA). In October 2010 he went for Sandakphu-Phalut-Gorkhey-Rammam trek in the Darjeeling Himalayas with 'Dada' and Santosh of the Mahamandal. It was his first tour to the Himalayas and also the first trek. Naturally he was thrilled. He observed everything keenly, enjoyed with his cultivated mind, and sometimes lost himself, as it were, in the silent serenity of the immense vastness. From November 2010 he stayed together with his 'Dada', whom he knew since he came to the Mahamandal - at the latter's suggestion, near Central Park, Kalyani, for the last three years of his life. The same house was also the main centre of the Mahamandal at Kalyani.
